AI Coding Agents: Claude Code, Codex and Copilot
Last updated: October 27, 2026
Most teams now use more than one AI coding agent. One developer prefers Claude Code, another uses Codex, and the company already pays for GitHub Copilot. Each agent is good on its own. The trouble starts when they work on the same product.
The problem with many agents
Each agent keeps its own rules file in its own format. A rule added for one agent is missing for the others. The same task, given to two agents, comes back built two different ways.
None of this is the agent's fault. They all start from whatever context they were given, and that context differs per tool and per person.
What orchestration adds
AI agent orchestration puts one layer above the agents. The layer holds what should be the same for all of them:
- One spec. Every agent works from the same approved requirements.
- One set of rules. Written once and translated into each agent's format.
- One record. Every run is logged and checked the same way, whichever agent did it.
The agent becomes a choice per task, not a choice per team.
Claude Code vs. Codex vs. Copilot
Claude Code comes from Anthropic, Codex from OpenAI and Copilot from GitHub. All three can read a repo, edit files and run commands. The right one is usually the one your team already pays for and trusts.
The better question is whether you can switch. If your specs and rules live inside one agent's config, you can't. If they live above the agents, switching costs nothing.
How nTra orchestrates coding agents
nTra is a spec-driven product engineering platform: every task your AI coding agents build traces back to a requirement your business signed off. You write your rules and skills once in the Agent kit, and nTra translates them for Claude Code, Codex and Copilot. Atlas, the nTra knowledge base, maps your code and docs and serves them to any agent over MCP.
Each task starts from an approved brief and runs on the agent you pick. nTra re-runs the checks itself and ends each task as a pull request your team reviews.
