Agentic AI in Software Development: How It Works
Last updated: November 2, 2026
Agentic AI is AI that works toward a goal instead of answering one prompt. An agent gets a task, makes a plan, uses tools, checks its own results and keeps going until the task is done or it needs a person.
In software development, that changes what AI is for. A chat assistant helps you write a function. An agent can take a whole task, from reading the requirements to opening a pull request.
Agentic AI vs. generative AI
Generative AI produces an output: text, code or an image. Agentic AI uses generative models inside a loop. It decides what to do next, calls tools such as a terminal or a test runner, and reacts to what comes back.
The difference matters for teams. Generative AI needs a person to drive every step. Agentic AI needs a person to set the goal and approve the result.
Where agents help across the lifecycle
Requirements. An agent can interview the product owner, write down the answers and flag what is still missing. The output is a spec that people can approve.
Planning. Agents turn the approved spec into design documents and a sized task list, so the plan matches what was agreed.
Building. Coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex and Copilot write the code and the tests for each task, in a branch of your repo.
Review. A separate agent reviews the change and re-runs the checks. A person makes the final call on the pull request.
One agent or many?
A single agent can do a small task end to end. Larger work goes better when it is split up: one agent plans, others build, and another reviews. This is called multi-agent orchestration.
The hard part is not the agents. It is keeping them on the same plan, with the same rules and the same knowledge of your codebase.
Keeping people in charge
Agentic AI fails in a predictable way: it does the wrong thing confidently. Three habits prevent most of that.
- Approve the goal first. No agent starts until a person approves the spec.
- Check, don't trust. Tests are re-run outside the agent, not taken from its summary.
- Gate the merge. Agents open pull requests. People merge them.
How nTra applies agentic AI
nTra is a spec-driven product engineering platform: every task your AI coding agents build traces back to a requirement your business signed off. Discovery agents help you write and approve the brief. Maestro then coordinates the work, and Atlas gives every agent the same knowledge of your code and docs.
Each task runs through the coding agent you already use and ends as a pull request your team reviews. Nothing merges without a person.
